The Most Important Calculation Rule
Why UPSC Age Is Calculated on 1 August
Under the standard age provision reflected in the latest UPSC Civil Services Examination notification, a candidate must have attained 21 years and must not have attained 32 years on 1 August of the examination year. Eligible categories may receive the specified upper-age relaxation.
Minimum-Age Boundary
A candidate who turns 21 on 1 August satisfies the standard minimum-age condition. A candidate who turns 21 on 2 August does not.
Upper-Age Boundary
A General or EWS candidate who turns 32 on 1 August has attained 32 and does not satisfy the standard upper-age condition.
Exam Date Is Irrelevant
The Prelims date may fall before 1 August. The prescribed age cut-off remains 1 August of that examination year.
Target-Year Notice Prevails
Future-year calculations are planning estimates until UPSC publishes the notification and rules for that examination cycle.

The following General/EWS date-of-birth windows are arithmetic projections based on the present standard rule of attaining 21 but not attaining 32 on 1 August. They are provided for planning and are not advance notifications by UPSC.
OBC, SC, ST, PwBD, eligible ex-servicemen and specified Defence Services candidates should apply the relaxations available under the notification for their target year. For the complete conditions, read the UPSC CSE eligibility guide.

UPSC Upper-Age and Attempt Limits
Age and attempts are separate limits and both must be satisfied. The descriptions below use “below” to avoid the common mistake of treating the upper-age number as inclusive on 1 August.
Attempts Left
How to Calculate Your Remaining UPSC Attempts
The age calculator determines chronological age. It cannot know how many Preliminary Examinations you actually attended.
- Identify your maximum attempt limit from the applicable category.
- Count each Civil Services Preliminary Examination in which you appeared in at least one paper.
- Subtract those counted appearances from the applicable attempt limit.
- Check whether the remaining target years also fall within your age limit.

Frequently Asked Questions
UPSC Age Calculator FAQs
What date should I enter in the To Date field?
Enter 1 August of the examination year you intend to target. For CSE 2027, use 01-08-2027.
Should I calculate age on the UPSC Prelims date?
No. Under the rule reflected in the latest notification, Civil Services Examination age is determined on 1 August of the examination year, even when Prelims is held earlier.
Can a General or EWS candidate be exactly 32 on 1 August?
No under the standard rule. The candidate must not have attained 32 years on 1 August. A candidate who turns 32 on that date has crossed the permitted boundary.
Can an OBC candidate be exactly 35 on 1 August?
No under the usual three-year relaxation applied to the standard rule. The candidate must remain below 35 on the cut-off date and must satisfy the reservation-related conditions in the notification.
Can I apply if I turn 21 after Prelims but on or before 1 August?
The age condition is tested on 1 August. Therefore, a candidate who has attained 21 by that date satisfies the minimum-age component, subject to every other eligibility condition and the target-year notification.
Does the tool automatically calculate attempts left?
No. The tool calculates age between two dates. You must separately count the Preliminary Examinations in which you appeared in at least one paper and compare that number with your applicable attempt limit.
Does filling the UPSC application count as an attempt?
No. An attempt is counted when the candidate actually appears in at least one paper of the Civil Services Preliminary Examination.
Are the 2027–2031 date-of-birth ranges officially notified?
No. They are planning projections based on the present age formula. UPSC can revise rules, and the notification for the relevant examination year will prevail.
Which date-of-birth document should I use?
Use the date recorded in the certificate accepted under the UPSC notification, commonly the Matriculation, Secondary School Leaving, Higher Secondary or recognised equivalent certificate specified by UPSC.
Is the ClearIAS UPSC Age Calculator an official eligibility certificate?
No. It is an educational planning tool. UPSC and the competent Government authorities make the final eligibility determination based on the applicable rules and documents.

@Hemwant Gaur – The upper age limit for candidates with benchmark disability (general category): 42 years.
Apart from the mentioned limits, OBC/ SC/ ST candidates will get the benefit of cumulative age relaxation. This means age relaxations get added in special cases, say, for example, if the person is OBC + Ex-servicemen, he will get an extension.
