Despite facing complete visual impairment from a young age, Manu’s resolve remained unshaken. His journey proves that no physical or societal obstacle can block the path of sheer determination.
Manu Garg: Visual Impairment, Unstoppable Vision
Manu’s symptoms began in Class VIII when he struggled to see the blackboard even from the front row.
Diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder causing retinal degeneration, he gradually lost his sight completely. But instead of allowing it to limit him, he used technology and inner strength to move forward.
Academic Excellence Despite the Odds
- Schooling: St. Xavier’s School, Jaipur
- Graduation: Hindu College, Delhi University (History and Political Science)
- Master’s: International Relations, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU)
- Currently: Pursuing Ph.D. in South Asian Studies at JNU
Throughout his academic journey, Manu adapted by using technology tools like text-to-speech features and OCR (Optical Character Recognition) to access study material, proving that with the right tools, no barrier is insurmountable.
“I didn’t count study hours. I focused on achieving my daily goals, even if it meant studying late into the night,” Manu shared.
Manu Garg’s UPSC Journey: Persistence and Innovation
Manu first attempted the UPSC in 2023, but couldn’t clear the Mains. Instead of being disheartened, he recalibrated his strategy:
- Focused on self-study and digital resources.
- Chose Political Science and International Relations as his optional, aligning with his academic strength.
- Relied on a strong daily planning system rather than rigid study hours.
Finding an appropriate scribe was another challenge, but one that he navigated with patience and precision.
The Pillar of Support: His Mother
Manu’s journey would not be complete without mentioning his biggest supporter—his mother, a single parent.
Her emotional support, encouragement, and belief in him were crucial pillars that kept Manu grounded and focused during tough times.
Finding Joy Beyond Studies
Even amidst intense preparation, Manu made time for joy:
- Listening to audiobooks, stand-up comedy, and podcasts helped him relax and rejuvenate.
- He believes that humour and positivity played a crucial role in keeping his spirits high.
Manu Garg’s aspirations for the Future
If his rank permits, Manu dreams of joining the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), with a keen focus on:
- Disability rights
- Education for the underprivileged
- Women’s empowerment
“We don’t want sympathy or to be treated like heroes—just equal opportunities and access are enough.”
His vision for a more inclusive India reflects the deep empathy born from personal experience.
