The above vacancies are based on the UPSC CSE notification – which is published before the beginning of the exam.
Usually, by the time when final results are declared after 1-year long exam cycle, the vacancies are seen to increase further.
For example, in 2020, the reported initial vacancies were only 796. However, it increased to 836 at the time when UPSC announced the final results.
UPSC IFoS Exam Vacancies
This year, there is a great increase in the number of vacancies for the Indian Forest Service Exam (IFoS) conducted by UPSC as well.

UPSC Exam Competition
The number of candidates who apply for the UPSC Civil Services Examination has increased a lot in recent years. However, the UPSC exam competition is hugely over-rated.
Around 11 lakh candidates apply for the exam. However, only 5.5 lakh candidates may be expected to appear on the exam day (Prelims). Around 50% attendance has been the trend in many of the previous years.
Out of the 5.5 lakh candidates who sit in the Preliminary Exam, only 10% of candidates may be expected to be serious candidates who come prepared well.
Thus the real competition in UPSC CSE maybe only with the 50,000 candidates who take the exam in the right seriousness.
This gives good chance for aspirants who do quality practice and proper training to crack UPSC CSE.
Plenty of opportunities for serious UPSC aspirants
Now, the Government of India maintains a database of the bright candidates who reached up to the interview stage in the UPSC Civil Services Examination.
This database can be used by both public and private employers to recruit suitable candidates.
PSUs like NTPC and government authorities like the Sports Authority of India (SAI) have already started recruiting for top posts from candidates who attended UPSC interviews.
Thus, for bright candidates, there is now plenty of opportunities in the public and private sector.
