UPSC Postpones Civil Services Preliminary Exam 2024 due to General Elections. The decision to revise the exam timetable was taken after the Election Commission earlier announced the schedule of the Election to the 18th Lok Sabha in April – June 2024. Read further for more details.
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has rescheduled the Civil Services Examinations (CSE) 2024, which was scheduled for May 26, 2024.
The Preliminary exam will now be conducted on June 16.
The decision to revise the exam timetable was taken after the Election Commission on Saturday announced the schedule of election to the 18th Lok Sabha in April – June 2024.
UPSC Postpones Civil Services Preliminary Exam 2024 due to General Elections
- The UPSC CSE exam has been postponed due to the schedule of the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections according to the new notification.
- The prelims exam will now be held on June 16, 2024. Earlier, the exam was scheduled to be held on May 26.
- UPSC Notification 2024 was released on 14 February 2024.
- In a statement on its website, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) said it decided to postpone the civil services prelims exam from May 26 to June 16.
Previously, the Commission had extended the registration deadline for the UPSC IAS exam 2024.
- According to the official announcement, the registration deadline was extended until March 6 at 6 PM.
- Subsequently, the correction window remained open from March 7 to March 13.
UPSC Civil Service Preliminary Exam Date 2024
- The date of the UPSC Civil Services Exam (Prelims) 2024 is now June 16, 2024.
- The Preliminary Exam is objective. It has two papers – General Studies Paper I and General Studies Paper II.
- General Studies Paper I has subjects like Current Affairs, History, Geography, Polity, Economics, Science and Technology, and Environment.
- General Studies Paper II (CSAT) has subjects like Mathematics, Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Mental Ability, Decision Making and Problem Solving.
UPSC Civil Service Mains Exam Date 2024
UPSC Civil Services mains exams are set to be held from September 20 for five days, no change has been announced for this as of now.
- The start date of the UPSC Civil Services Exam 2024 (Mains) is 20th September 2024.
- The main exam is generally conducted in 5 days – and it usually involves two weekends from September 20, 2024.
- The Main Exam is subjective (written). It has nine papers. Out of these nine papers, marks in the seven papers are used for calculating final ranks.

Number of Vacancies Reported
- The number of vacancies to be filled through the examination is expected to be approximately 1056.
- This includes 40 vacancies reserved for Persons with Benchmark Disability Category.
UPSC CSE Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible to appear in the UPSC Civil Services Exam 2024, an aspirant must fulfill the following eligibility conditions:
- Nationality: The candidate must be a citizen of India.
- Educational Qualification: The candidate must hold a graduate degree from any recognized university. Those in the final year of graduation can also apply.

UPSC CSE Age Limit
The candidate must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 32 years (general category).
There is an age relaxation of up to 3 years for OBC candidates and 5 years for SC/ST candidates.
The minimum age limit to appear for the UPSC CSE Preliminary exam is 21 years. The upper age limit varies for different categories:
- For General category candidates: 32 years
- For OBC category: 35 years
- For SC/ST category: 37 years
