UPSC Civil Services Mains 2013 General Studies Paper 1 (GS1) was a real surprise for all candidates. It had, for the first time, 25 compulsory essay questions to be written within 3 hours.
The total word limit mentioned was as ‘not more than 5000 words’. This was a change from the previous 3000-3600 word papers, and hence required writing at great speed to finish.

IAS Mains 2013 General Studies Paper 1 (GS1) Questions
Instructions for GS1 paper: There are 25 questions. All questions are compulsory. Word limit in questions wherever specified, should be adhered to. Content of the answer is more important than its length.

- Q24. With growing scarcity of fossil fuels, the atomic energy is gaining more and more significance in India. Discuss the availability of raw material required for the generation of atomic energy in India and in the world. 10 marks-200 words
- Q25. It is said the India has substantial reserves of shale oil and gas, which can feed the needs of country for quarter century. However, tapping of the resources doesn’t appear to be high on the agenda. Discuss critically the availability and issues involved. 10 marks-200 words
